- Gain experience applying GD&T to parts in several different assemblies.
- Understand the importance of choosing datum features based on functional interfaces within an assembly.
- Gain experience applying appropriate tolerances on primary, secondary, and tertiary datum features.
- Gain experience applying unambiguous, measurable, function-based tolerances to important part features.
- Gain experience with decisions about which features to explicitly tolerance and which to leave to a profile of a surface tolerance specified in a general note.
- Understand options and common practices regarding inspection of features that are not explicitly toleranced (those left to a profile of a surface in a general note).
- Become familiar with manufacturing process-based tables of initial tolerance values.
- Understand the considerations and methods for choosing initial tolerance values.
- Understand the “what, why, who, when, and how” about tolerance stack analysis:
- Understand practices for worst-case and statistical tolerance stack analysis, and when each is appropriate.
- Learn and practice the 8 steps for manual, one-dimensional worst case and statistical tolerance analysis.
- GD&T application examples, using parts that comprise several different examples of mechanical part assemblies (tolerancing applied will be used in subsequent tolerance stack analysis).

About Your Trainer:
Dean Watts has been providing Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) training and consulting since 1999. Prior to his engineering education he worked in production machining, precision sheet metal, and TIG welding. He is an American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Senior Level GD&T Professional (ASME GDTP S-0295). He is a member of three ASME standards development committees: ASME Y14.5 “Dimensioning and Tolerancing", ASME Y14.8 “Castings Forgings and Molded Parts”, and ASME Y14.45 “Measurement Data Reporting” (Chair). He holds BSIE and MSME degrees from Oregon State University. He taught ME 411/511, a GD&T fundamentals course, for 10 years as an adjunct faculty member at Oregon State University. He is also a former U.S. Navy Submarine Warfare Officer, and retired U.S. Coast Guard Reservist.
